Who can the Sacramento Kings target to backup De’Aaron Fox?
By John Kelly
While unlikely, the Sacramento Kings could pursue Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Derrick Rose, though it’s unclear if the team would have any interest.
Sacramento will have to improve the roster by getting solid role players with minimum money and an above-average backup point guard could help the team go to the next level. One player who fits that mold even if there’s little chance he would sign with Sacramento is Derrick Rose.
With the young core of De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield and Marvin Bagley III exceeding expectations, it opens the door to attract higher-caliber free agents. Rose is a long shot to sign the Kings and he might be too old for the Kings’ timeline, but Rose likely wants to get playing time and be a part of playoff team.
Rose has made his money, he might want to re-define his career as a great leader. There will be plenty of teams courting Rose and it comes down to whether Vlade can sell him on joining De’Aaron Fox and Co.
Rose could play and teach at the same time and he would fit the mold of a big-name acquisition and it’d be fun to watch Rose and Fox play together. On the season, Rose averaged 18 points per game, 2.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists on 48.2% shooting in 51 games before he had shoulder surgery. He also had a 50-point game last season, showing he still has plenty to offer.
With Sacramento Kings Head Coach Luke Walton still under investigation by the team and the NBA for sexual battery, however, it’s highly unlikely the Sacramento Kings even kick the tires on Rose, a player who was accused of rape in 2016.
