The Sacramento Kings are entering an offseason where big decisions for the team are inevitable. This includes free agency.

The Kings will have 6 players on their current roster that will become free agents this Summer. These players are Rajon Rondo, Seth Curry, Quincy Acy, Eric Moreland, James Anderson, and Caron Butler.

So far here at ARP, we have discussed Rondo, Curry, Acy, Moreland, and Anderson. Now it is time to discuss the future for Caron Butler.

More from Kings News

Caron Butler’s tenure with the Kings organization has not been ideal. The former NBA All-Star played just 17 games for the year where he only started 1 of those games.

In those game, he averaged 3.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game, which were all career lows. He also finished the year shooting 42.4% from the court, 16.7% from the perimeter, and 83.3% from the free-throw stripe.

Express Yourself

It is important to know that Butler does have a player option going into next season, so if he opts into it, he will remain a King. But if the scenario comes where Butler decides to opt out of his contract, should the Kings stay committed to Butler and try to pursuit for his services for next season?

According to a fan poll that ARP posted a few days ago, fans thinking Butler should not wear a Kings uniform next season was the most popular choice and I agree with this thought.

Rafe’s Thoughts

I think it’s fair to say that Butler got a raw deal this season in Sacramento. Even though that was the case, I do not think the Kings should re-sign the former UConn Husky.

Although Butler brings veteran leadership that the Kings have been lacking for quite some time, the Kings really should take a younger approach going forward.

With newly hired coach Dave Joerger leading the Kings now, it would be smart to give him more young players that he can develop and build going forward, especially since he has a reputation for it. Besides, Butler is 36 years of age. If he does decide to opt out of his contract, let him go to a contending team where he can experience a good dose of winning in the later stages of his career.
