Notes From Seth Curry’s First Kings Media Session

Normally I wouldn’t go out of my way to cover a player’s media availability, but this is a little different. I happen to be a huge Seth Curry fan, and I’m still very stoked that Vlade Divac managed to steal him away from the New Orleans Pelicans and get him to the Sacramento Kings for the next two seasons.

To his credit, Curry seems similarly stoked to be joining the Kings. It’s no secret that he’s been grinding for the last few seasons in both Summer League and the NBA Development League to make an NBA team and stay on the active roster for a season, and despite the national media equating the Kings to a ticking time bomb Curry seems to have no trepidation in regards to suiting up in Sacramento.

Curry called joining the Kings “a dream come true” and later said he was in “a great situation here in Sacramento”. Seth said he picked the Kings over the Pelicans because they’re “an up-and-coming team” and he liked the fast pace that George Karl intends to play with this season.

Curry also said he was a fan of the attitude around the team–that players like his new teammate Rajon Rondo are seeking to prove themselves in the NBA, much like Curry himself is trying to do with his tenure in Sacramento. That’s a great attitude to have in the obviously very competitive NBA, and one that many Kings teammates probably share.

Even the best player on the Kings, DeMarcus Cousins, is known for having a chip on his shoulder. And rightfully so. Even Boogie gets a lot of undeserved criticism sometimes, and I’m sure the big man still feels like he has a lot to prove. In fact, I think you’d have a hard time finding a single King who doesn’t feel that, which could go a long way towards building team chemistry through that common identity.

Curry also mentioned that he can play both point guard and shooting guard, something that Vlade Divac alluded to in an interview as well regarding the Curry signing. That versatility helps Karl find Curry some more playing time, which is crucial for a young guy fighting for minutes.

He also spoke a bit about his relationship to brother (and also NBA Champion and MVP) Stephen Curry, saying that they had talked often and that Steph was thrilled Seth earned himself an NBA contract with the Kings, calling Steph a “big fan”.

Later he talked about playing Steph (which will happen quite often considering they now play in the same division), saying he “can’t wait” for the eventual Curry on Curry matchup. Seth said he’s not sure there’s a secret or way to cover Curry, but jokingly (or maybe not) added he had success in the past defending Steph during 1 on 1 games.

Even if he’s not the long-awaited “Curry stopper” that Matthew Dellavadova masqueraded as for a game or two in the NBA Finals, I still believe Seth Curry will make positive contributions to this Kings team and potentially become a Sixth Man of the Year candidate for this team someday.
