Training camp is a big deal. It gives the front office a chance to see how everyone plays together before they start whittling down the training camp roster into the regular season roster.

As important as it is for the management, it's equally important for the players. This is their first real opportunity to build a rapport as a team and start to establish some sort of rhythm.

That can be kind of an issue when players start mid-season. It's even worse when the coach starts mid-season, all of which happened to the Kings in 2024-2025.

Devin Carter makes a great point

One of those mid-season players was Devin Carter. He was drafted by the Kings in 2024 but spent the first half of last season on Sacramento's G League affiliate, the Stockton Kings.

He played his first NBA game in January 2025, which was after Mike Brown's firing and before the Kings traded De'Aaron Fox. It was a rough period to be a rookie on the roster.

For Devin, the 2025 training camp is his first actual training camp with the Sacramento Kings. As odd as it sounds, it's his first full introduction to the team he's been playing with for months, something he talked about at the 2025 media day.

Big ambitions for Devin Carter

The 2024-2025 season was Devin Carter's rookie introduction to the NBA. Jumping into the team halfway through definitely causes complications for new players. It makes it difficult for them to figure out how they fit into the rotation.

For this season, Carter has set himself the goal of being the Kings' backup point guard. It's a big target for such a young player, but that doesn't mean he can't do it.

Seeing Carter have that kind of ambition is good for the roster. If the players are pushing for better, that means the team has a real chance to do better, too. This all starts at training camp, both for Devin and for the Kings.
