Everyone likes to point out the fact that the Kings have an unbalanced roster, mainly because it's true. They are overloaded with shoot-first guards while lacking in play making and defensive focus.
As such, bringing in Dennis Schroeder during the offseason wasn't exactly met with fanfare from any corner of the NBA. He's a frequently traded point guard that every team seems to want but never wants to keep long enough to build around.
According to Hunter Paterson, the Detroit Pistons beat writer with The Athletic, Dennis might fit in better with the Kings than some people believe. In particular, he could be helpful to Keegan Murray.
Taking Keegan Murray to the next level
Recently, Paterson was speaking with Sactown Sports 1140. Being that Schroeder's last team before the Kings was the Pistons, Paterson knows a bit about him.
Paterson believes that Keegan Murray's style of play will mesh well with Schroeder's, leading to a real rapport building between them on the court. This could help unlock Murray's full potential, not to mention setting them both up for more minutes on the court as a solid duo.
Beyond that, Paterson described Schroeder as being "...very blunt and demands the best out of his teammates...." He might offer the much younger Murray the guidance he needs to find his next gear, assuming it works out. Dennis has been known to rub some teammates the wrong way.
Dennis Schroeder's potential
As it stands, Dennis Schroeder's upcoming tenure with the Kings is a lot like Schrodinger's Cat. Fans will just have to open the proverbial box to see if it's alive or dead when the season starts.
Bringing Schroeder in has every opportunity to go horribly wrong, particularly on such a guard-heavy team. He could end up just being used in another midseason trade.
Schroeder also has the potential to be the catalyst that rights the ship. At the very least, he is a seasoned veteran presence who still has plenty of good tread on the tires and could play a big part in bringing the best out of one of the King's top young guns.
