Finally some good news for the Sacramento Kings.

Before yesterday, the Kings, Denver Nuggets, and Milwaukee Bucks all had identical records of 33-49 to end the season. This meant that there was a three-way tie held at the #8-10 spots in the NBA draft lottery.

The tiebreaker was settled yesterday which gave the 10th spot to the Bucks, the 9th spot to the Nuggets, and the 8th spot to the Kings.

This is significant for Sacramento because their draft pick is currently in danger of being owned by the Chicago Bulls depending on where the lottery balls fall on May 17th. If the Kings find themselves receiving a pick greater than #10, they will lose their pick. However, if they end up at the #10 spot or under, they will keep their pick.

With the Kings now in the 8th position entering the draft lottery, there is a very microscopic chance that the Kings will lose their pick.

If the unfortunate event does happen where three teams behind the Kings in the draft order jump up in the lottery, the Kings would have to give up their pick. Although it is unlikely to happen, Kings fans should still keep their fingers crossed since the franchise hasn’t had the best of luck in recent history with the lottery

To add more details, here are the chances (percentages) of the Kings striking gold in the lottery and receiving a top 3 pick:

  • 1.9% chance of winning the 1st overall pick in the draft
  • 6.8% chance of receiving a top 3 draft pick

It is also important to add that if the Kings do end up receiving a better pick than the Philadelphia 76ers after the lottery, Philly has the right to swap picks with Sacramento.

Again the Kings are very fortunate to receive the best case scenario from yesterday’s tiebreaker. The draft lottery will be held on May 17th to determine the order for the top 14 picks in this upcoming NBA draft. Do the Kings have another dose of lady luck left in them?
