The Sacramento Kings have made a bevy of roster changes in the last couple of offseasons, but none of them have been as profitable than signing Darren Collison.

When Collison signed with the Kings in the Summer of 2014, the expectations were that he would be the main orchestrator of the offense. But fast forwarding to 2016 his role on the team has changed.

From being the starting point guard to start the 2014-2015 season, Collison currently sees himself now mostly as the back point guard to Rajon Rondo. Although his role on the Kings has changed, it hasn’t flustered the former UCLA Bruin from continuing to produce great numbers.

In his tenure with Sacramento Collison has played a total of 110 games. In those games, Collison has averaged 14.6 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds a game. All of this while playing an average of 31.8 minutes in each contest and also shooting 47.7% from the court, 38.7% from the perimeter, and 81.7% from the charity stripe.

Not only are the total numbers impressive for the Kings point guard, but Collison has also been able to produce these type of numbers on a gamely basis, becoming one of the top consistent and reliable players on the Kings roster.

Darren Collison has been a player that the Kings and their fans expected him to be and more. For a team that reeks inconsistency, Darren has been able to fight off that norm and become a positive contributor to his team. Because of that, he deserves the respect of the Kings front office to discuss the possibility of extending his contract.

Collison’s contract currently is a duration of 3 years total (in his 2nd year now) in which he is due to earn a total of a little bit over 15 million dollars. That is the 33rd most expensive contract, in terms of annual salary, out of all point guards in the NBA (per Spotrac).

Collison has definitely played up to his contract, and when it expires he will become a hot commodity for NBA teams looking for guard play in 2017. This will for sure earn Collison a big pay in his future.

The Kings should not let Collison be available to the market. Instead, restrict him the chance of that and discuss a potential extension THIS offseason.

Again, Collison has been one of the few bright spots the Kings have had in the last 2 seasons, but they could potentially lose him if something isn’t done this Summer.
