Well, so much for the second round of Wesley Matthews to the Sacramento Kings hype. This was an interesting if short-lived part of one of the most ridiculously dramatic NBA storylines I can remember. I’ll recount it here, because I really want to write about this. The following information is all from Adrian Wojnarowski’s twitter page.
Free agent center DeAndre Jordan, who was rumored to have problems with Chris Paul and his role in the offense with the Clippers, had agreed to a max deal with the Dallas Mavericks. But because from July 1st to July 9th no deals can actually be made (only agreed upon) thanks to the moratorium (which exists so the salary cap can be determined) Jordan had second thoughts.

He allegedly contacted several important Clippers people, including head coach and GM Doc Rivers, and informed them he wasn’t sure about heading to Dallas after all. This was then followed up by four Clippers traveling to Houston (where Jordan lives during the offseason) through various means, which they documented through emojis.
Yes, seriously. Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick and Paul Pierce all tweeted emojis (or pictures of emojis, in old man Paul’s case). Steve Ballmer and Doc Rivers didn’t tweet any emojis, but they made the trip too. Chandler Parsons, the leading recruiter for the Mavericks, also had some emojis to share.
It got even crazier from there. The Clippers all mobilized and met Jordan at his house, and apparently have blocked off the Mavericks from entering. They may actually be trying to prevent Parsons and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban from meeting with Jordan by waiting until the moratorium ends and having him sign a deal right away.
The Mavericks will obviously be furious if the Clippers succeed in luring DeAndre back to Los Angeles, and the fallout may ruin a few other agreements agreed upon during the moratorium. The important question here, considering this is a Kings site, is if Jordan’s (in)decision will affect Sacramento.
The short answer: I highly doubt it. Rajon Rondo, Marco Belinelli, Kosta Koufos and James Anderson should all remain with the Kings for next season. Given that Matthews is staying put in Dallas, the Kings will have no reason to want to rethink the moves they’ve made–no doors seem to have opened that would change anything for Sacramento.
However, it is important to note that the butterfly effect this whole situation has could play out in weird and unpredictable ways. Keep your eyes on what the Mavericks do, because there is a chance it affects what the Kings do. I just wouldn’t count on any drastic developments in the coming weeks based on this, as the Kings roster is really solid right now.
