Sacramento Kings trade Ramon Sessions to Washington

The Sacramento Kings have completed a deal that will send Ramon Sessions to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Andre Miller, per Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski. We hinted yesterday that this trade could be coming before the trade deadline. This trade makes a ton of sense for the Kings both on and off the court. Financially speaking, it makes sense as Andre Miller’s contract expires at the end of this season. Sessions would have been on the books next season for $2.2 million.

Andre Miller’s value for the rest of this season won’t be about his on court impact. His impact will be felt in team meetings, the locker room and during practice. He will likely serve as a coach on the floor for the Kings. Miller has played several seasons with George Karl during their time together with the Denver Nuggets. Miller will help his new teammates adjust to Karl’s system, as well as the expectations he has for his players.

As Miller’s career is coming to a close, this trade could open a second act for Miller as an assistant coach. George Karl is currently forming his staff for next season. With the relationship Karl and Miller have to go along with Millers experience in the system, it could be a nice fit going forward as George Karl starts to think about next season and what his coaching staff could look like.

Ramon Sessions has been a disappointment since signing with Sacramento. He has averaged just 5.7 points and 2.7 assists in 17.8 minutes per game this season. The second unit has seen a major drop off in terms of production. Trading Sessions should open more consistent minutes for Ray McCallum. While McCallum hasn’t played particularly well, either, consistent playing time this season could help him improve heading into the 2015-2016 season.
