Roadblocks Stand Between George Karl Landing on the Kings Bench

While rumors continue to swirl about George Karl becoming the next head coach for the Sacramento Kings, a few roadblocks continue to stand in the way. While the Kings seemingly wanted to remain patient in their pursuit of Karl, the recent firing of Jacque Vaughn by the Orlando Magic has increased the pressure on the Kings to make a move sooner as opposed to later. If they remain hesitant, Karl could be on the bench for the Magic.

The first road block before Karl can be the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings was a difference of opinion of where to start contract talks. They had disagreements in terms of years and dollars. Sam Amick of USA Today is reporting that both sides have become much closer on both number that gives faith a deal could be completed.

Amik is also reporting that there are rumblings coming out the camp of DeMarcus Cousins expressing displeasure with the possible hire. Per Amik, “Cousins’ agents, Dan Fegan and Jarinn Akana, have been adamantly opposed to Karl’s hiring.” The specific reasons for the unease is not stated. They may believe Karl’s style may harm Cousins or fear Cousins may not be as integral in the new offense.

Amik did say “Yet as of Sunday evening, there were signs that the resistance from Cousins’ camp was waning and that the two sides could be nearing a deal.”

There is also some belief the hesitation on Karl may be coming from management. Not only does management have an idea of how the offense should run but they like to have input on which players are apart of the roster. Karl has proven to be an excellent mind that can produce results on the floor. Karl may not agree with every decisions ownership may want to make and tension could arise.

The Sacramento Kings will owe their first round pick to the Chicago Bulls if it does not fall inside the top 10. These selections make a massive difference for smaller market teams that can’t always lure a big name free agent away from their former team. The recent losing streak including 11 of their last 12 has all but assured the Kings of another season outside the playoffs. A Karl hire may put a bottom 10 finish in jeopardy.

Time will tell what will happen between the Kings and Karl. A deal could be done as early as this week assuming the two sides can come together and some of the minor issues can be ironed out.
