A day after being released by the Toronto Raptors, power forward Jonathan Mogbo has been signed by the Sacramento Kings. This is a good move for Sacramento, as adding a new power forward to the mix offers a greater range of options for a team that's trying to find a path towards relevancy.

The Raptors drafted Mogbo deep in the second round back in 2024. He would play two seasons in Toronto, showing himself to be a solid bencher with potential as a reliable rotational player. That was in his first season on the roster, at least, as season two went much differently for him.

During the course of the 2025-2026 season, other players became developmental priorities for the Raptors, specifically Collin Murray-Boyles. That became a problem for a team with a crowded frontcourt. Mogbo ended up spending most of his time either on the bench or in the G League.

This all culminated with the Raptors not taking his team option and releasing Mogbo into the world of free agency. Being that their front office just drafted yet another forward, that meant someone had to go. But the Kings are turning Toronto's pain into their gain when it comes to Mogbo.

Mogbo is a good developmental option for the Kings

Sacramento has signed Mogbo to a two-way deal, which will give him time on the main roster and their G League affiliate. This is a move that makes perfect sense for both the Kings and Mogbo, as it is planning for the future that Sacramento definitely needs for this rebuild to work out.

While the Kings have a lot of guards and an almost appropriate number of centers, they are lacking in forwards. Specifically, power forwards. They've made big leaps in that area, but they also need to keep their eyes a few steps down the road. Mogbo is a great development talent for them.

He's a versatile, disruptive defender who acts as a playmaking hub and collects rebounds like it's his only calling in life. On the downside, Mogbo has no outside shot and his ability to finish at the rim is rough on a good day. There are are postitives and negatives to bringing him in.

The Kings are likely looking to focus Mogbo's development on these problem areas while assessing how he fits into their rebuild plans. But if they weren't serious about him, they wouldn't have used one of their three precious two-way contracts. This is another smart offseason move for Sacramento.
