There's no denying that Scott Perry did right by the Sacramento Kings in the 2025 NBA Draft. Well, it's safe to say that the 2026 edition is looking almost as good, if not better in some ways. This should give fans hope that this rebuild is both legit and in the hands of someone who will make it successful.
When Perry took over as general manager on April 21, 2025, the Kings were absolutely imploding. Despite his success, head coach Mike Brown had been fired months earlier. That game of "blame the coach" led to long-time point guard and face of the franchise, De'Aaron Fox, to request a trade.
Even worse, years of mismanagement by the previous front office left Perry with a team that was grossly imbalanced and ill-suited to compete together. Perry likely knew from day one a full rebuild was needed, but convincing a co-owner who avoided that previously would be challenging.
After the dismal and problematic start to the 2025-2026 season, Perry got Vivek Ranadive on board with the rebuild. In truth, Perry already started the rebuild months before that at the 2025 NBA Draft which brought the rookie trio of Maxime Raynaud, Nique Clifford, and Dylan Cardwell to the roster.
Perry keeps pushing the rebuild forward with the draft
All three 2025 rookies have turned out to be huge acquisitions for the Kings, and the foundation the rebuild is being built on. The hope among Kings fans is that Perry would be able to pull off the same magic in 2026, picking up three new rookies to add to the Beam Boys.
To be honest, Perry exceeded expectations. The Kings got Darius Acuff Jr. with their seventh overall pick, the true point guard the roster needed. He manuvered one second-round pick into a first-rounder to get Alex Karaban and used his last pick to get Emanuel Sharp.
All three of these players fill key gaps, such as the starting point guard problem and their issues with wing depth. They will be good fits with the 2025 sophomores as well as other Kings like Devin Carter, Precious Achiuwa, Russell Westbrook, Daeqwon Plowden, and Killian Hayes.
Kings fans should be pleased by the outcome of the 2026 NBA Draft. It shows that Perry will continue to make the right decisions and predominantly great moves to push the rebuild forward. Now, he just has to do something about DeMar DeRozan, Domantas Sabonis, and Zach LaVine.
