It was the right call.

The Sacramento Kings have announced that they are retaining the services of Precious Achiuwa, likely the smartest decision their front office will make this offseason. With him in place, the core of the success the Kings had last season remains intact, and the rebuild officially has real stability.

When the Kings signed Achiuwa, it was several games into the 2025-2026 season. The fact that he was still a free agent at that point was surprising, to say the least. He is an incredibly efficient and reliable defender, not to mention an explosive scorer when the moment calls for it.

Achiuwa did exactly what the team needed him to do. He immediately reinforced the Kings' almost nonexistent defense, actually making it something tangible. On top of that, he had some incredible scoring games. It was obvious to anyone paying attention that he found a home in Sactown.

Fortunately, Sacramento's front office felt the same way. They have signed him to a two-year contract worth $11.5 million. This should be incredibly welcome news to the Kings and their fans, as he has become a big part of what Sacramento is trying to do in this long-overdue rebuild they've started.

The Beam Boys will remain together for a couple more seasons

In addition to signing Achiuwa, the Kings also had a great 2025 draft. They picked up Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in addition to signing the undrafted Dylan Cardwell shortly after that. These three rookies combined with Achiuwa became the Beam Boys, the core of the Kings' rebuild.

For this process to be a success, it needs a reliable core. Thanks to an injury-plagued season, Sacramento stumbled on that group. All four of the Beam Boys got a lot more minutes due to injuries to a variety of established players, giving them a chance to develop individually and as a unit.

Achiuwa was key to building the Beam Boys. He's been in the league a lot longer than the rest of the group, but is still well under 30. He's the perfect veteran to pair with the energy of these three rookies. It's impressive how quickly they formed a bond as a group, and the potential they have.

Going into 2026-2027, the Kings have three new rookies on the roster after the 2026 draft, including a brand new point guard in Darius Acuff Jr. If everything goes well, they will eventually be rolled into the Beam Boys and continue the rebuild alongside Achiuwa and his crew.
