Kings' ownership seems all in on the rebuild (and that is great news for fans)

Hopefully, it stays that way.

Sacramento Kings' general manager Scott Perry is on a mission to rebuild and rebalance the roster. His biggest obstacle is co-owner Vivek Ranadive, who has micromanaged the team. If recent reports are true, it looks like Ranadive is all in on the long-term plan and hopefully stays all in.

Rebuilding a roster as off-kilter as the Kings is going to take a lot of time, work, and patience. Despite the strange motivational posts he constantly puts on social media, Scott Perry has been explicitly realistic about the enormity of the project Sacramento is choosing.

To be blunt, it's really not even a choice. If the Kings ever want to be competitive, particularly in a conference dominated by the Thunder, the Lakers, and the Nuggets, they need to make some very real changes. That doesn't just mean to the players on the court or the coaches calling the shots.

The whole ethos of the franchise has to change, and that has already begun. Head coach Doug Christie has been pushing a stronger focus on defense since the beginning of training camp. That is where the new Kings will find their footing and hopefully grow from as long as no one gets in the way.

The Kings are often their own worst enemies

Since buying the Kings as part of a larger group in 2013, co-owner Vivek Ranadive has been infamous for his deep involvement in his team. It was allegedly his call to bring in the duo of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, which has worked out for Sacramento as well as it did for Chicago.

For better or worse, Vivek's vision for the Kings has been their guiding direction for over a decade. The franchise has been through a few head coaches and general managers during that time as they all tried to make that vision a reality. Perhaps they did, and it was the vision that was flawed.

Based on some reports, it seems that Scott Perry may be the one to have finally gotten Ranadive going in the right direction. He's made it clear to Vivek that this rebuild is a long-term process, one that will create a team that could be quite different from what Ranadive had envisioned.

The hope is that Ranadive can stay the course. This is not going to be easy, and things will likely get worse before they get better. But it will take fortitude, patience, and confidence to make this rebuild work. If Vivek stays on board, Sacramento could finally get the version of the Kings it deserves.
