In all the Lakers talk surrounding LeBron James and Luka Doncic, other players tend to get lost in the shuffle. Regardless, the storied NBA franchise can't afford to lose sight of its ultimate goal, and that's adding more championship banners in the rafters.

Apparently, the franchise also can't afford to pay Austin Reaves what the market would seem to indicate he's worth. Time is running out on his current contract, and the Lakers have yet to lock him down. That may not be happening.

While losing Reaves could harm the Lakers' shot at their next title, it could work out incredibly well for the Kings. If they're looking for a new, young star, and the franchise better be, Reaves would fit the bill.

Austin Reaves' current contract

In 2021, the Oklahoma player left his college basketball career behind and declared for the NBA Draft. Reaves declined to be selected 42nd by the Detroit Pistons, went undrafted, and signed a two-way contract with the Lakers.

Since then, Reaves has grown to become a reliable starter and a frequent on-court sidekick to LeBron James. He's currently in a four-year contract worth $53.8 million with a player option for the 2026-27 season, which he is widely expected to exercise.

At this point, Austin Reaves has proven his value and is looking for a contract that reflects that. It's looking less and less likely that the Lakers will offer him that.

If the Lake Show is going to have both Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the marquee, they won't be able to afford a raise for Austin. And if LeBron is leaving, either through retirement or moving to another team, the Lakers will likely look for another megastar to ride with Luka.

The Kings should make an offer

Reaves has yet to sign an extension because the Lakers are unwilling to pay fair market value for his services. This opens the door for other teams, such as the Kings, to make a move.

After losing De'Aaron Fox to the Spurs, the Kings require another point guard. They have no shortage of shooting guards. Dennis Schroeder recently joined the team as a point guard, but he likely won't be around long at the rate he gets traded.

Reaves could be the puzzle piece the Kings are looking for, a point guard to complement Domantas Sabonis' All-Star talent at center. The two stars could bring the best out of each other.

Even more important, it's a move that could eventually help add a banner or two to the rafters of the Kings' own arena, Golden 1 Center.
