NBA commentator absolutely flames Kings' roster construction

An honest claim...

The Sacramento Kings are looking to build a contending team around Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan. However, Sacramento's roster has question marks to say the least. The Kings could struggle in 2025-26 as a result. NBA reporter Jared Greenberg recently shared his honest thoughts on the Kings' roster construction, via Yahoo! Sports.

"Sacramento is the funniest roster in the NBA right now," Greenberg said. "Like, it's the funniest roster... Putting Russell Westbrook on that roster with Dennis Schroder, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan and Domantas Sabonis, it's like, do they just want a fight for the basketball at some point with their own team?"

Westbrook has been linked to the Kings. Greenberg clearly is not a fan of Westbrook's potential fit in Sacramento. LaVine and DeRozan are both quality scorers, while Sabonis does a little bit of everything at the forward/center position. Meanwhile, Schroder is a reliable guard. Westbrook may have success off the bench, but he likely wouldn't be the best fit as a starter alongside the aforementioned players.

It remains to be seen if Westbrook -- who spent the 2024-25 season with the Denver Nuggets -- will end up with the Kings. Sacramento has been rumored to be a landing destination for the veteran guard. Westbrook played fairly well off the bench in Denver, finishing seventh in Sixth Man of the Year voting. He averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per outing.

The Nuggets feature a number of talented players on the roster. The roster itself has uncertainty, though. LaVine and DeRozan create a respectable scoring duo, and Sabonis is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. However, it remains to be seen if any of those players will be able to lead this specific Kings team to a deep postseason run.

Additionally, Sacramento's depth is far from certain. They would benefit from a few more reliable role players. In the end, Sacramento does not look like a true championship contender at the moment. Perhaps they will make some moves to take a step in that direction.

Greenberg is seemingly not a fan of the team's current roster construction. One has to imagine there are other analysts who feel the same way. The Kings will do everything they can to ignore the outside noise. With that being said, one could argue that the criticism is indeed valid.

Regardless, Sacramento's talented players may be able to help the Kings silence the doubters. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but there is upside on the roster.
