As always, there are several teams across the NBA who aren't performing well and have very little to be excited about for the rest of the season. But some are worse than others, and then there are a select few who have a path forward that looks dark, dreary, and dreadful.
While speaking with Zach Lowe, Mo Dakhil was asked which NBA franchise he would least like to be right now, and he said that the Kings are the ones who take the cake. Even though this team was so promising just a few seasons ago, they are stuck in a very big rut, don't know how to fix it, and don't have many options for a rebuild.
The "fire sale" won't help Sacramento
Like many others, Dakhil believes that a "fire sale" could be coming to the Kings, meaning they might trade away basically every player who is worth a dime. Numerous reports have said that a total rebuilding of the franchise may be right around the corner.
But Dakhil isn't sure how this will really help the Kings, because they don't have enough assets to start a healthy rebuilding process. Yes, DeMar DeRozan might be able to bring in a decent return, especially since his contract is good. And Domantas Sabonis is talked about as one of the most coveted big men out there. But what can those trades do? Will the Kings receive enough to really move the needle, or will sending away DeRozan, Sabonis, or even LaVine just bring back minor players who don't help the Kings climb higher in the standings?
Additionally, Dakhil doesn't see a future with this team because of—you guessed it—management. He said the front office panics too easily, makes drastic firings, and hopes that will fix their problems. That is no way to run an NBA franchise. Yes, the Kings were having problems when Mike Brown was running the team, but they are now in even worse shape with Doug Christie as head coach. Who will they fire next, and who else will be the scapegoat?
There are plenty of teams in the league who are going through a rough phase. The Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, and Memphis Grizzlies are just some of the many who are attempting to build a promising future to look forward to. But the Kings don't have many exciting prospects on the horizon. And their previous choices and mindsets make fans fearful of what they will do next.
