The first several games of the Sacramento Kings' season have not gone to plan. Head coach Doug Christie has been very vocal to the media about his frustrations and how things are going to change. That same big talk might be what ultimately costs him his job if he can't deliver on those words.
When Doug Christie took over as head coach, the Kings were in a rough spot. They had recently fired former head coach Mike Brown and traded De'Aaron Fox, their number one point guard and face of the franchise, to the San Antonio Spurs. It was all part of a terrible season for Sacramento.
Then, Christie walked into his first Kings' training camp as head coach with a strong message for his team. To be more specific, the focus would be on defense. There's no doubt that the Kings' defense has been lacking for years, but it's tough to switch gears with a roster geared towards offense.
That contradiction has become increasingly apparent as the season has progressed. Sacramento's defense might actually be worse than ever, allowing 531 points scored against them in the last four matchups. That's an average of 132.8 points per game. The current league average is 115.5.
Doug Christie isn't happy with the Kings
For the past few losses, Christie has been making interesting use of his media availability. Sometimes it's before the game, and other times it's after. The common denominator is that he wants to see better from his team and has high expectations for them.

Christie is laying down a lot of tough talk for his roster, which is a double-edged sword. There's a fine line between motivation and trash-talking your own crew, and Christie might be starting to walk on the wrong side of it. He needs to be tough, but he's also expected to lead.
Yes, the Kings need a stronger defensive presence. There's no question of that. But Christie's current roster isn't built with that in mind. Instead of trying to push them into a strategy that isn't working, it might be time to take a step back and formulate one that does work for your current roster.
It's safe to say that no one in the Kings' organization is happy with their trajectory. While they work out their next steps, Christie's big talk could back him into a corner. If he's not careful and this season continues to be a debacle, he could end up feeding ducks in the park beside Nico Harrison.
