With the NBA Finals set, two former members of the Sacramento Kings will face off for a championship. This is definitely causing Sactown fans to feel a certain way. But by the time this series is over, the Kings may finally be able to move on from the mistakes of the past and look to the future.
When it comes to making unforced errors, the Kings are the absolute masters. They inexplicably passed on Luke Doncic, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jalen Brunson in the 2018 Draft. They traded away both Tyrese Haliburton and De'Aaron Fox. And they also fired Mike Brown.
Since then, Doncic, SGA, Brunson, and even Young have done pretty well for themselves. Haliburton made it all the way to the 2025 NBA Finals. Now, the 2026 NBA Finals are on with Fox playing for the Spurs and Brown coaching the Knicks. Either way, a former King is getting themselves a ring.
Not surprisingly, that has led to some exceedingly conflicted feelings among Kings fans. Naturally, they want to see Fox or Brown win. At the same time, it's tough seeing those guys succeed away from the Kings, knowing that they left the franchise purely because of bad management.
It's time for the Kings to move on to bigger and better things
Part of the reason it's been so hard for the Sactown faithful to move on from these departures is that the Kings haven't given them much to move on to. As a general rule, the Kings haven't done well since moving to Sacramento with the last couple of years in particular being pretty much the worst.
Climbing uphill is hard enough without throwing massive rocks in your own path, which is exactly what the Kings have been doing. The franchise has been stepping on their own toes for years. Keeping that in mind, the 2026 NBA Finals could be exactly what the Kings and their fans need to move on.
All of this is now the past. With the end of these finals, the past should finally be put to bed. The Kings are in the midst of a rebuild that's actually off to a solid start. For the first time in a long time, there might be real, sustained momentum coming to this franchise, enough to let past mistakes go.
Watching the Kings trade Fox and fire Brown was hard, but those actions were the inciting incidents for this rebuild. Otherwise, this franchise would have likely continued to limp along. Now there's a real chance to move forward, and it all starts with a cathartic release of bad vibes from these finals.
