The Sacramento Kings have basically wrapped up their depth chart with their signing of Vince Carter. They should be done in free agency.

When word broke out that Vince Carter agreed to join the Kings on a one-year deal, it became evident to me. The Kings are and should be done in free agency.

The Kings came into free agency needing to address a few, but needy positions. Many, including me, predicted De’Aaron Fox and Frank Mason to be the two point guards on the roster on opening day. However, adding a veteran to the roster seemed to be the right move especially with the Kings’ cap space.

July 4 Moves

George Hill, the veteran point guard, was signed on a three-year, $57 million deal and was seen as the best available point guard at the time. He will come in as the starter and will provide leadership to the team as well as mentorship to Fox and Mason.

It was one heck of a move that was immediately followed up by another great signing. Former Grizzlies’ big man Zach Randolph signed with the Kings a few minutes after Hill’s agreement.

Signing a power forward was a need with Skal Labissiere still learning and Harry Giles coming in as a rookie. Randolph will most definitely provide a huge presence down by the rim and paint area. He averaged around 14 points and 8 rebounds last season off the bench! He will give learning lessons to both Skal and Giles and still contribute greatly to the offense and defense.

Plugging the last hole

At last, the Kings addressed their biggest need. Small forward was only occupied by rookie Justin Jackson so a veteran had to be signed. And when I mean veteran, I mean it. Vince Carter was signed to a one-year contract which will pay him $8 million. The 40-year-old forward was not my ideal candidate because I do not want to rely on him to be our potential starter, but it’s still a fun move.

The Kings have accomplished all that they really needed to do which brings me to my last point. A while back, I wrote about what us fans should expect in terms of free agent signings this summer. All of my predictions were correct! I expected the Kings to sign one point guard, one small forward and one power forward and Bingo! At this rate, the Kings will win the championship this year!
