The Sacramento Kings selected Frank Mason III at pick 34 in the 2017 NBA Draft.  This article gives the Kings a grade and a reaction to that pick.

The Sacramento Kings use their fourth pick in the 2017 NBA Draft on Frank Mason III, a point guard from Kansas.  Mason is an undersized one who can shoot the lights out.  Below is the Kings draft grade for this pick and my reaction.

Draft Grade- B+

Reaction

Frank Mason III gives the Kings a second point guard in this draft.  Mason had a fantastic stat line last season.  He averaged 20.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.3 steals per game while shooting 50.0% from the field, an impressive 47.1% from three, and 79.4% from the foul line.  Those are great numbers and could provide Sacramento with a much-needed shooter off the bench.  To read more about Frank Mason’s game check out his prospect profile found here.

The worry about Mason is he is 6’0 tall with shoes, and he is already 23 years old.  The Kings need to hope he can translate his game to the NBA quickly.  I believe he will struggle on defense and will have trouble finishing around the rim due to his height, but Mason seems to have a safe offensive game that should provide the Kings with a rotational point guard.  To see his on-court abilities check out the highlight video below.

I like this pick and player, but I preferred both Jawun Evans and Jordan Bell who were still on the board, so I cannot give this selection an A grade.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Sacramento Kings came away with a nice haul of players in this draft.  The night is not over, but the Kings have no more scheduled picks.  They came away with De’Aaron Fox, Justin Jackson, Harry Giles, and now Frank Mason III.  Those are four exciting young players that should jump start their rebuild and give the Kings much-needed talent on their roster.  Good job GM Vlade Divac and company, now the key is to continue to develop these players and grow as a team.
