Not too long ago, Ty Lawson’s status with the Sacramento Kings was in jeopardy as he missed the team’s flight to Kentucky, but now it looks like he will be the ONLY active point guard for the purple and white to start the season.
It was reported yesterday by various sources that the Kings waived both Jordan Farmar and Isaiah Cousins.
With the recent roster moves made by the Kings while adding on to the fact that Darren Collison will miss the team’s first eight games due to suspension, it leaves Lawson as the only pure point guard active on the Kings’ roster.
Lawson came into this season motivated in order to redeem himself after having a disappointing year, and it looks like he now has a tremendous opportunity to do just that. The question is, however, how well can Lawson play in the beginning stage of the season?
Thoughts
Offensively, I think Lawson will be fine. In his four preseason games with the Kings, Lawson averaged 7.3 points and 4.3 assists while playing around 21 minutes per game.
Expect those numbers to go up as a result of his playing time boosting dramatically, especially the assist numbers. Lawson is at his best when being a playmaker, and I expect to see him to be a solid distributor in these next eight games.

Defensively, I do not have high expectations for Ty. He doesn’t have a great reputation as a defender and hasn’t shown much progress during his preseason play. Bottom line, don’t expect Lawson to make much of an impact for the Kings defensively.
Summary
Overall, I think Lawson will do an adequate job as he faces the hefty task of playing the majority of point guard minutes for the Kings in the next eight games. Like I mentioned above, Lawson’s game is mainly to benefit the offensive side of the ball, so expect him to do most of his damage there instead of on defense.
