It might be hard to believe, but there's slightly under a month left in the 2026 offseason. The Sacramento Kings go back to work on Wednesday, October 21, on the road against the LA Clippers. Between now and then, there are a few things Sactown's finest need to nail down, like the roster.
Calling the Kings' 2025-2026 season a debacle might be an insult to debacles. They headed into the campaign with an unbalanced roster, a rookie head coach, and the beginning of what would be an endless barrage of injuries. Sacramento was cooked before the opening game.
Hopefully, the same isn't true this season. While a great deal of work remains, there have been some improvements to the roster. Doug Christie has a bit more experience under his belt. And there shouldn't be so many injuries this season. If there are more somehow, they'd have to forfeit games.
That doesn't mean everything is ready to go right now. Sacramento still has to nail down who is going to fill their final main roster spot as well as their last two-way contract. Plus, no one knows for sure what the starting lineup or bench rotation is going to look like. Decisions must be made.
Who are the 2026-2027 Sacramento Kings?
The projected starting five is Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, De'Andre Hunter, Zach LaVine, and Darius Acuff Jr. Given the Kings' current roster and how much both Sabonis and Murray are getting paid, this seems likely. Well, at least for the beginning of the season. Things can and will change.
A major factor as the Kings move through the season will be their focus on development. Hunter and LaVine should both be gone at the end of 2026-2027, and Sacramento will trade Sabonis as soon as possible. Plus, the Kings have several rookies and sophomores who need time to grow.
Add into that the empty spots on the roster. The Kings have Elfrid Payton signed to a non-guaranteed contract for training camp, which could lead to a permanent role. There's no clear name to fill the final two-way spot, but it's safe to assume they have ideas on who to get in the pipeline.
The only thing for certain with the Kings right now is that nothing's for certain. Sacramento's front office might get tired of Christie halfway through the season and fire him. Any number of bombshell trades could happen. All that matters for now is getting through game one, preferably all healthy.
