Amid the endless speculation of what Russell Westbrook was going to do for season 19, he threw everyone a curveball and announced his retirement. Westbrook will finish his career with one season as a Sacramento King and a lot of historic moments for fans at the Golden 1 Center to cherish.

Even without an NBA Championship, Brodie created one of the greatest legacies on the court any point guard could hope to leave behind. The man brought skill, passion, and tenacity to every game he played. Even from the sidelines, he was a force to be reckoned with as a motivator and guide.
The man's career is studded by accolades and accomplishments. Westbrook was the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2017. He was a nine time All-Star, not to mention a two-time All-Star Game MVP. He had two All-NBA First Team selections, five Second Team selections, and two Third Team selections.
More than that, Westbrook was a baller. He was the league's scoring champion in 2015 and 2017, then turned around and led the league in assists for 2018, 2019, and 2019. While Nikola Jokic is catching up and will likely overtake him, Brodie retires as the current triple-double leader with 209.
Westbrook left an indelible mark on Sacramento
He didn't stop building his legacy during the final season of his career on the Kings, either. Westbrook kept climbing the all-time lists in various stat categories, not to mention adding to both his double-double and triple-double totals. Brodie's Sacramento season was better than anyone predicted.
More importantly, Westbrook stepped in when the Kings needed him the most. They didn't sign him on to be the starting point guard, but he sure rose to the occasion when Sacramento called. He was a major part of the reason why the Kings were even remotely watchable in 2025-2026.
Westbrook's impact will continue to be felt in Sacramento for years to come. Rookies like Maxime Raynaud have spoken about how much his mentorship meant to them in their first year in the NBA. Imagine showing up for your first game, and having Russell Westbrook there to show you the ropes.
While Brodie hasn't announced what's next for him, there are no shortage of options out there. Personally, I've always believed he would make one heck of an NBA coach, possibly in Sactown. Any team would be lucky to have a mentor of his caliber there to help build the next generation.
