Russell Westbrook, an NBA living legend and notorious fashion icon, is still looking for a spot in the 2026-2027 season. The Sacramento Kings are likely to re-sign him, but the rumor mill is flying fast and furious. And some of that wild speculation is getting more than a little hard to take seriously.
After spending his 17th season in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets, the front office asked Brodie to take his player option and leave. This was reportedly done much to the chagrin of Nikola Jokic. So, one of the greatest point guards of all time found himself un-rostered for the first time in his career.
That's where the Kings fit in. They showed up just before the beginning of the 2025-2026 season to add Westbrook to their roster. He did not disappoint, making history while also becoming Sacramento's starting point guard. Brodie reportedly became a mentor to several rookies,
Once again, salary cap issues caught up with the Kings and they have so far been unable re-sign Brodie for what will be his 19th season. Sacramento still may have an opportunity to bring Westbrook back once they stretch DeMar DeRozan's contract after waiving him.
Rumors relating to Westbrook's future have gone global
Much like the 2025 offseason, there isn't a lot of NBA interest in Westbrook's services. The Kings were the only team last year and appear to be the only serious contender this year. That being said, the Rockets are also rumored to have some interest in bringing him back to Houston.
It's hard to say how serious that interest actually is, or if it's just more smoke and mirrors. There are a lot of rumors surrounding Westbrook's future. Over the last couple of years, he's been connected to offers from China and Europe, though there is very little concrete evidence to support that.
Most recently, there are reports from an Israeli newspaper that Brodie is close-ish to a deal to play for Hapoel Tel Aviv. That could be true. It could also be more speculation than anything. but it's not out of the question. If Westbrook wants to play but can't find a berth in the NBA, EuroLeague makes sense.
The reality is that no one will know what's going on with Westbrook before he's ready to let the world in on the news. But if he does end up staying in the NBA, it really does feel like the Kings are the most likely spot. Darius Acuff Jr. is going to need all the help he can get.
