It seems odd. Russell Westbrook, one of the greatest point guards in the history of the NBA, is garnering serious interest from basically one team. But the Sacramento Kings also need him more than anyone else because they are desperate for a veteran point guard to guide the rebuild.
I have made no secret of my belief that Westbrook would make an excellent coach someday. His breadth of knowledge about the game of basketball in general is impressive, particularly when it comes to being a point guard. Plus, he reputedly makes a pretty darn good mentor.
But playing alongside Westbrook means accepting the fact that Brodie does things a certain way, and that doesn't always fit into a specific coach's system. That has been misinterpreted as making him difficult to coach, a baseless rumor that has been floating around about him recently.
The Oklahoma City Thunder didn't seem to have a problem coaching him during the 11 seasons he played there. Yet, he has played for six teams in the seven seasons since he left OKC. Whatever the league's issues are with Westbrook, they don't seem to want to give him a long term chance.
There's a reason Westbrook fits the Kings so well
Sacramento knows a thing or two about being undervalued in the NBA. Projections for the 2026-2027 season show them winning 21.5 games, which is crazy. They barely scratched out 22 wins in 2025-2026, but the additions and updates they've made should earn them a few more victories.
At this point in his career, Westbrook is just as underestimated as the Kings. He took over as Sacramento's starting point guard, and had one of his best seasons since OKC. Unfortunately, the Kings salary cap issues meant they couldn't automatically re-sign him. That may be changing.
The Kings need a veteran point guard to not only backup Darius Acuff Jr., but to mentor him. No one is better for that role than Westbrook. While most of the league seems to be pretending Brodie isn't there, the Kings know that he could be the answer to some of their biggest concerns right now.
Apparently, the Rockets may also be looking at adding Westbrook to the roster. He's played for Houston before, and it went okay at best. There's no doubt that the mutual fit between the Kings and Westbrook is much better. And it would be nice to see him finish his career on a team that wants him.
