The Kings have more guards than they could possibly use, meaning there is a fight for minutes coming this season. Some of these players are going to have to get traded or waived, if possible.
That being said, there is one young guard who the Kings' front office should be paying attention to. And his name is Pat Spencer.
He's only been around the NBA for a short period of time, mostly in the G-League. Still, during the 40+ games he played with the Golden State Warriors, he impressed a lot of people with his style of play.
Pat Spencer on the court
On paper, Spencer doesn't look like an impact player. His numbers are not exactly spectacular, though you do have to keep in mind that he was averaging just over six minutes a game on the floor. And Warriors' head coach Steve Kerr isn't exactly known for his focus on developing young talent.
What Impressed about Pat Spencer was his tenacious, hard-nosed style play. He's the kind of guy who will dive after every loose ball and stand up for teammates when things get tense.
His background in lacrosse helps him see the entire court, allowing him to be a playmaker. Spencer is never going to be a primary scorer but he will drive the lane or nail a three-pointer when you need it most. If someone gives him the opportunity and the minutes, he could be an incredible sixth-man.
The Kings need someone like Spencer
At this point, the Kings are basically drowning in guards, but how effective some of them will be remains to be seen. A lot will depend on how the offense is run.
That being said, it would be worth making some moves to get Spencer. Once thing the Kings need is someone to step up off the bench to make big plays on both ends of the court. He has the capability to do that.
The Warriors didn't extend Spencer's contract at the end of the 2024-2025 season, making him an unrestricted free agent. Being that they missed out on Josh Giddey, Spencer is someone the Kings should be strongly considering as a priority.
