With the situation between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks slowly reaching a boiling point, it seems increasingly likely that a trade is coming. This creates a massive opportunity for the Sacramento Kings to make trades that will finally move two of their most expensive stars.
For the past few years, rumors of Antetokounmpo's departure have swirled endlessly. Since winning the NBA Championship in 2021, the Bucks have declined year after year to the point that they have entirely missed the postseason in 2026. It's not an ideal situation for a major star in his prime.
Antetokounmpo has stated as recently as the 2026 Trade Deadline that he will never request a trade. That may be changing as he has publicly aired frustrations with the organization. The Bucks have been doing the same, which seems to indicate they are equally frustrated with him.
Milwaukee being ready to move on from Antetokounmpo represents a titanic shift of power in the NBA. It could be especially interesting for the King, as the Bucks have shown interest in Zach LaVine in the past. Regardless of that, there is an opportunity for these two teams to help each other.
Opportunities will open for the Kings to make trades
Sacramento wants to move on from both LaVine and Domantas Sabonis, which could open the door to a trade between the two teams. Antetokounmpo heading to the Kings would be huge for the team and its rebuild process. That being said, it's unlikely he would stay in Sacramento for too long.
Even if some version of that trade worked out over the summer, there's only one year left on Antetokounmpo's current contract. Unless he really buys into the rebuild, he would be gone by the end of 2026-2027. Still, that would get LaVine and/or Sabonis off Sacramento's books.
The other angle is Antetokounmpo getting traded to another team altogether. Any trade involving him is likely to start a cascading series of trades across the league as rosters are reshuffled. That is also a situation the Kings can take full advantage of to make some major moves to open up the rebuild.
If Antetokounmpo lands in Sacramento, that would be a game-changer for the Kings without question. Even being traded at all creates opportunity. At the same time, the league has been here several times, and he still remains in Milwaukee. Then again, something feels different this time.
