For Kings' fans, this year's FIBA EuroBasket was a big deal. Sacramento's new point guard, Dennis Schroeder, won the gold for Germany and was named the MVP.
Going into the first full season of the post-De'Aaron Fox era, having a solid point guard is going to be a big deal. That being said, fans should still temper their expectations. Schroeder has long had problems transitioning FIBA success to the NBA court.
The Kings' front office should continue this EuroBasket trend and take a look at one of Schroeder's FIBA teammates, Isaac Bonga. This monster defender could help rebalance their roster.
Isaac Bonga in EuroBasket
The German small forward and power forward has carved out a place for himself in the basketball world with his strong defensive game. He's played in the EuroLeague, the Serbian League, the ABA League, and the NBA.
After being drafted by the Sixers in 2018, Bonga would go on to play for the Lakers, the Wizards, and the Raptors. His most recent season in the NBA ended in 2022.
Bonga's EuroBasket performance showed what the 25-year-old player is capable of. He averaged 9.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. But his biggest contribution was his defensive prowess, which included 1.4 steals per game and several blocks throughout the tournament.
The Kings needs Bonga's defense
Going into the 2025-2026 season, the Kings still seem to be struggling with the composition of their roster. The balance has been off for years, leaning heavily towards shoot-first guards.
The team struggles with playmaking and defense, both things Bonga can help with. At 6'8" with and impressive wingspan, Bonga has proven to be a defensive force. And while he isn't a consistent scorer or playmaker, he delivers timely passes that set up teammates for success.
Realistically, Bonga isn't the answer to all of Sacramento's problems but he would definitely help. Plus, his chemistry with Dennis Schroeder could only be a good thing.
