The Sacramento Kings have more than a few gaps to fill, but a big one is starting point guard. While they are widely expected to draft one this year, there is another option on the table. Veteran point guard Tyus Jones is a free agent and could be the exact kind of player the Kings need in this role.
As it stands right now, the Kings' starting point guard is Russell Westbrook. He is easily one of the greatest to play that position. Sacramento is hoping to retain him in free agency, but Westbrook is also closing in on retirement. His 20th season is getting closer and closer every day.
On top of that, the Kings have two young point guard options on the roster in the form of Devin Carter and Killian Hayes. Late in the season, Carter started showing signs of advancement, though he still needs development. Hayes is a very recent addition, and the Kings are still working on him.
There's a reason why most mock drafts show the Kings picking up a rookie point guard like Darius Acuff Jr. This would give them the chance to develop a point guard from moment one as part of their rebuild. At the same time, another seasoned presence on the court could be good for the team.
Tyus Jones presents a unique opportunity
Jones was drafted in the first round by the Cavaliers back in 2015. He's played for several teams over his career, with 2025-2026 being a season of major upheaval. He started the season with the Magic, was traded to the Hornets, then the Mavs who waived him, and finally signed with the Nuggets.
As a player, Jones has a lot to offer the Kings. He has experience as a floor general with a high basketball IQ and excellent floor vision. He's a pick-and-roll master, not to mention a solid perimeter shooter and a disruptive presence on defense. Jones brings a lot of great pieces to the table.
What makes Jones appealing specifically to Sacramento is his age and experience. He's not as well tenured as Westbrook, as he's only 30 and has several good seasons left. And he has a lot more experience than Carter and Hayes. He bridges that gap nicely, all at a manageable price.
Sure, the Kings also have Malik Monk, but Sacramento still seems like they want to trade him. Plus, he has repeatedly proven that he doesn't make a good starting point guard. Jones is a bit more versatile than Monk and adds more depth to the team right away without further development.
