Dexter Dennis has had a confusing couple of weeks. The G League champion was a surprise addition to the training camp roster on an Exhibit 10 deal. Not surprisingly, the young guard is the first preseason cut as the Kings prepare for the regular season.

After going undrafted in 2023, Dennis was picked up by the Dallas Mavericks, though he quickly went to their G League affiliate. He played the front half a season for the Texas Legends before moving the Cleveland Charge for the back half of 2023-2024.

The next season saw him heading to the Kings' G League affiliate in Stockton where he played a big part in winning the championship. He averaged 13.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. Dennis has potential to be a solid bencher in the NBA, but the Kings won't be that team.

The Sacramento Kings' weird roster

At this point, Sacramento fans are probably tired of talking about their team's unbalanced roster. It's a problem that keeps rearing its ugly head, and will continue to come back until the front office actually decides to do something of substance about it.

For Dexter Dennis, it meant finding a roster spot with the Kings was always going to be an issue. He is a shooting guard and Sacramento is borderline drowning in shooting guards. Fighting for minutes was an uphill battle for him before his feet touched the court.

His signing was more about putting him on a contract that would retain his services in the G League for now. That being said, Dexter's return to the Stockton Kings hasn't been officially confirmed, yet, so how that plays out remains to be seen.

Sacramento Kings missed an opportunity

This cut may have been short sighted for a team that is pushing for a stronger defensive presence. During his college career and in the G League, Dexter's reputation has been incredible on defense. He was an absolute menace on defense in college. On top of that, he's a reliable three point threat.

The Kings' first preseason game against the Raptors was highlighted by Sacramento absolutely falling apart on defense. This was despite their intensive training camp focus specifically on that aspect of their game.

Keeping that in mind, it doesn't make sense to waive a young player like Dexter who could have bolstered the Sacramento Kings' defensive presence. At the very least, the coaches should have let him play in a preseason game or two just to see what he could do.
