While the Kings are absolutely loaded with guards for some reason no one understands, they only have two dedicated point guards. De'Aaron Fox's departure created a huge hole in the roster.

The expectation was the Kings would be on a legendary offseason hunt for a new point guard, one that would lead the team and rally fans behind them.

So, the franchise picked up Dennis Schroeder. The German-born point guard has a long history in the NBA, mostly of being traded frequently, and isn't likely to be a strong replacement for Fox.

Dennis Schroeder's NBA history

Schroeder joined the Atlanta Hawks in 2013 and played with the franchise until 2018. That would turn out to be his longest tenure with any team by far.

Since the 2018-2019 season, Schroeder has played with nine different NBA franchises. That doesn't include his two separate stints with the Lakers. In each calendar year of 2022, 2024, and 2025, he will have been linked with three different teams.

Dennis isn't a bad player. In fact, he's probably a bit better than average. His problem is that he isn't good enough to be the cornerstone of a franchise but is good enough that he makes great trade fodder. That's why he's part of one third of the teams in the NBA.

The Kings will trade Schroeder midseason

If they haven't figured it out already, the Kings' front office will quickly realize that Schroeder is not a suitable replacement for Fox at point guard. This will lead to them scoping the league for a new one.

Fans should expect to see Schroeder get traded before the 2026 deadline to get them that new point guard. If he somehow survives the whole season, he will end up as part of an offseason trade package to bring depth and balance to the Kings.

The Kings have reputedly been trying to move Malik Monk and DeMar DeRozan to no avail. Dennis will end up packaged with one or both of them, allowing the Kings the room to maneuver. Until then, Schroeder will be a key part of what will be a 'meh' Kings' season at best.
