If there are basketball gods, they really don't like the Sacramento Kings. Keegan Murray is out injured for at least a week, leaving the roster even more depleted than it already was. But things aren't that bleak, as the Kings might have an opportunity to show what their next phase looks like.

The 2025-2026 season got off to a terrible start with game one. Domantas Sabonis missed the season opener with a minor injury sustained in the preseason. Murray was also out due to a preseason injury, though he ultimately missed multiple games throughout those early weeks.
Sacramento's injury situation has not gotten much better. As it stands right now, Sabonis, Zach LaVine, Drew Eubanks, and possibly Devin Carter are all out, some for more extended periods than others. Now, Murray can be added to that list of extended absences that will be an issue.
After leaving the Pistons' game early, Keegan was assessed and has a mild calf strain. It will keep him on the bench for at least a week, when his condition will be re-assessed. That means the Kings will face the Mavericks tonight short three of their main starters, though that's not necessarily that bad.
Kings have been finding success away from their main starters
Much like the Kings, the Mavericks have been dealing with major injury problems this season. Dallas will go into today's game without Kyrie Irving, Derek Lively II, Dante Exum, and Brandon Williams. Anthony Davis may also be out as he left their last game early with right adductor soreness.
The Mavericks still have a respectable roster led by the league's top rookie, Cooper Flagg, but the Kings have their own great rookies. Maxime Raynaud, Nique Clifford, and Dylan Cardwell are all doing well. Raynaud is already the starting center, and Murray's injury likely means Clifford will start, as well.
Despite the fact that Doug Christie appears to avoid using Keon Ellis at all costs, being short five players likely means increased time for the defensive standout. If Christie utilizes him properly, it's a great opportunity for him to get on the court and show the league his value as a player.
When the rookie core and bench players get more minutes, the Kings actually seem to do better. Despite the injuries, today's faceoff with the Dallas Mavericks might give Sacramento fans a glimpse into the future of the Kings if some of these proposed trades actually go through.
