The Kings don't need to win big this season to be a success

There's something that's more important for this franchise.

The Sacramento Kings have a long, long way to go before they are relevant in the Western Conference, let alone the whole league. But that shouldn't be the goal right now. They should start by focusing on being fun to watch. If they can accomplish that, success will follow in years to come.

Last season was an absolute nightmare for the Kings. Coming off the firing of Mike Brown and the departure of De'Aaron Fox, the roster was an imbalanced mess. Then, the front office made some seemingly random changes to the roster and hired a rookie head coach that has to prove himself.

In the end, Sacramento finished 2025-2026 with 22 wins and 60 losses as well as a historically bad 16 game losing streak. The worst part was the team wasn't even fun to watch. A fan base can tolerate losing if the team at least puts on a show. That was not the case for most of last season.

To be fair, the more rookies that got on the floor, the better the games were. The squad known as the Beam Boys consisting of Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell, Nique Clifford, and Precious Achiuwa infused real energy and passion into a roster that just seemed depleted and confused.

The Kings just need to be fun in 2026-2027 to get league attention

Fans really got behind the Beam Boys because they were playing good basketball as well as fun basketball. It was actually enjoyable to watch them, even if the Kings didn't get the win. The only other member of the roster infusing any joy in the Kings last season was Russell Westbrook.

For Sacramento to reach a point where the NBA is paying any real attention to what they're doing, this team has to be fun to watch. Fans have to be talking about them on social media. Highlights have to be splashed all over ESPN. Charles Barkley might even say something nice about them.

This is the first step to becoming relevant. Winning will come with time and experience as this team grows. But make no mistake that there is a lot of work to do to get there. The Kings have more than a few players currently on the roster the front office is going to have to make some hard decisions on.

For now, the goal has to be playing high-energy basketball that gets the fans in attendance off their seats and makes anyone watching at home wish they were there. That's how the Kings win the hearts and minds of the league before they start winning games. Changing the narrative matters.
