The Sacramento Kings signed Dennis Schroder this offseason. The veteran guard is hoping to have a big campaign in Sacramento with his new team. However, Sam Vecenie recently questioned Schroder's fit on the roster while playing alongside Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan.
"Is Dennis Schroder going to be happy if he only gets 10 shots or whatever, right? I don't know," Vecenie said during a recent episode of Game Theory Podcast w/ Sam Vecenie. "He got nine per game with Detroit, but then felt like he was a little bit better in the playoffs. And then he's coming off of a massive summer with Germany where he was awesome in EuroBasket again."
Kings' offensive outlook
The offense will run through Sabonis, LaVine and DeRozan. One has to imagine Schroder won't receive many shots per outing. The 32-year-old guard spent the 2024-25 season with the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons. As Vecenie mentioned, he recorded 9.0 field goal attempts per game in Detroit, but with Golden State Schroder averaged 10.5 shots per game. In Brooklyn, Schroder took 14.1 attempts per outing.
It goes without saying, but those are fairly drastic changes in field goal attempts per game within the span of one season. He played in between 20-30 games with each team last year as well, so Schroder was able to establish a role for himself in Detroit, Golden State and Brooklyn. The question is whether or not he will have more of a Nets role or a Pistons role in Sacramento.
Detroit was a contender while Brooklyn missed the postseason. This Kings team has serious question marks, but as mentioned, the aforementioned three players will receive most of the opportunities for scoring. Still, perhaps Schroder will be content if he can average 10-12 -- or possibly more -- field goal attempts per game.
Dennis Schroder, Kings preparing for 2025-26 NBA season
If he receives less than that, it will be interesting to see how he responds. Schroder is a quality offensive player, but he needs the opportunity to score the basketball. The Kings will have to find a way to allow Schroder to receive those opportunities on a consistent basis.
For now, Sacramento is focused on figuring things out in the NBA preseason. Kings fans will watch closely to see what Schroder's role is on this 2025-26 team. Schroder could make a significant impact alongside DeRozan, LaVine and Sabonis if given the opportunity.
