In a season of blowout losses, the Sacramento Kings' recent beating at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies stands out as the worst. Memphis lost in basically every possible stat category, proving that a complete rebuild is the only way to save the franchise at this point.
The 2025-2026 season just keeps getting worse for the Kings. They're currently sitting at 14th in the Western Conference with a record of three wins and 13 losses. Only the New Orleans Pelicans are below them in the West. If they pick up a win and Sacramento loses another, the Kings are dead last.
Most fans thought the low point of the season so far was the Kings' disastrous home stand. It featured one win and four losses. Even worse, three of those losses were by massive amounts. If you felt that made it hard to be a Kings' fan, last night would have been a real kick in the crotch.
Somehow, the Kings lost to the Memphis Grizzlies by 41 points, and Ja Morant wasn't even playing. That number alone is absolutely devastating. But the more you look at the stats from last night, the worse that magic eye picture becomes. It was a legendary train wreck.
The Kings find a way to get even worse
None of the numbers look good. Memphis took 54 three-point shots and sank 17, while the Kings only took 33 and got 11 of them to fall. The Grizzlies collected 49 rebounds compared to Sacramento's 32. Assists were even worse, with 42 to 24 in favor of Memphis.
Oddly enough, steals and blocks were a bit more comparable. The Grizzlies had 11 and three while the Kings had five and five. But Sacramento did dominate in two stat categories. They had 22 fouls and 16 turnovers. Memphis only had 11 fouls and seven turnovers. Go team?
The Grizzlies' domination of Sacramento was virtually complete in every possible way. And this is a team that is at roughly the same level as the Kings, so it should have been competitive, if not a win. If Sacramento can't beat a shorthanded Memphis that is also in the basement, they're screwed.
That's why the rebuild is so necessary. The Kings in their current state are not even remotely competitive and will continue to limp by at best. They'll pick up a few wins, but it's unlikely that they'll even do better than that. It's time to tear this whole thing down and start from scratch.
