Unless something drastic changes, it's become apparent that the Sacramento Kings are not planning to re-sign Russell Westbrook. This makes him an unrestricted free agent who is shopping for a new home. When this happened last season, the only team to even consider signing him was Sacramento.
There's no question that Westbrook is one of the greatest point guards to ever step foot on an NBA court. He has set numerous records and benchmarks that other players will spend their entire careers chasing. Really, the only thing he hasn't done at this point is win an NBA championship.
That's not happening with the Kings for two reasons. First, they are a long way off from being contenders. Arguably more important is reason number two, the fact that Sacramento doesn't seem to want Westbrook on the roster anymore. That would make it hard to win a title with the Kings.
While Sacramento's front office has yet to make an official announcement, Westbrook is currently an unrestricted free agent and the Kings have made no overtures towards signing him back to the team. This is concerning as no other team appears to be stepping up to sign the All-Star.
Westbrook's future is in jeopardy
Durind the 2025 offseason, the Nuggets asked Westbrook to not take his player option as they didn't believe they needed him. Based on how the 2026 playoffs went for Denver, they really could have used Brodie. This move turned him into a UFA with no teams seriously talking about signing him.
Until the Kings showed up, of course. They were the only NBA franchise to make an offer to Westbrook, which he took. Sacramento is lucky he did as Westbrook became their starting point guard, and set many personal bests while playing for them. It gave fans something to cheer about.
With his apparent departure from the Kings, there has been no real discussion of other teams wanting to sign him. The Kings waited until the last minute before the start of the 2025-2026 season, so something similar could possibly happen before the 2026-2027 season gets underway.
If no one ends up signing Westbrook, season 18 with the Kings would have been his last. That's not how a living legend should go out, especially if he still has gas in the tank and tread on the tires. Hopefully, the Kings find a spot for Brodie on their roster. His veteran guidance would be invaluable.
