One of the most talked-about landing spots for DeMar DeRozan after leaving the Sacramento Kings remains the Miami Heat. Apparently, they may also have been thinking about adding Zach LaVine. If true, their front office hasn't figured out that DeRozan and LaVine playing together doesn't work.
So, it doesn't look like LaVine is going anywhere any time soon. The Kings seem to be good with him hanging around this season, and he appears to be on board with whatever plans Sacramento has. That being said, if an opportunity arises to make a beneficial trade, they'll probably go for it.
This is an interesting and complex dynamic. The DeRozan situation was far simpler. Sacramento just waived him and is going to spread his remaining salary over the next few seasons. See how straightforward that was? Then again, LaVine's much higher pay rate is a major hurdle.
DeRozan is still settling on a new team while LaVine prepares for at least one more round with the Kings. The Heat remains a viable option for DeRozan and reportedly has interest in LaVine. Sacramento and Chicago have put in a lot of combined years proving that duo is a dead end.
It's one or the other between DeRozan and LaVine
This should be a superstar pairing, but success does not seem to follow them. Operating together on the Bulls didn't lead to much for the storied Chicago NBA franchise. The Kings are not as respected a team, but putting LaVine and DeRozan together led to pretty much the same kind of nothing burger.
Despite several seasons failing as a duo, the Heat allegedly have interest in putting LaVine and DeRozan together one more time. Honestly, neither LaVine nor DeRozan probably want that. It's also not going to happen, as LaVine's immediate future appears to be locked down in Sactown.
When LaVine and DeRozan are on the court together, they always seem to end up stepping on each other's toes. That's the danger of putting two shooters on the court together. They're always looking for similar opportunities, which leads to a slightly competitive dynamic over teamwork.
At the moment, LaVine is better off with the Kings, while DeRozan needs to find a different spot. If that turns out to be the Heat, great. He'll fit in nicely there. But the best thing for both players is to be on separate teams and build a future in the league apart from each other.
