Now that the Golden State Warriors have officially decided to extend the Steve Kerr era, they need to get serious about making upgrades to their squad. That includes needing a center who can produce, such as Domantas Sabonis. He's the exact kind of beast Stephen Curry would love to feed.
As it stands right now, the Warriors have three centers in Charles Bassey, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford. With four seasons behind him, Bassey has some experience in the league, but he hasn't really shown himself to be the kind of starter Golden State wants to run with Curry.
Porzingis is one heck of a center when he's healthy. Unfortunately, he's on the bench injured more and more over the last few seasons. Then there's Horford, who is 40 years old and could retire at any minute. Basically, the Warriors have a few options at the five, but none of them are great.
It's also worth noting that all three of these centers are unrestricted free agents. Who does and doesn't get re-signed remains to be seen, keeping in mind that the Warriors are reportedly trying to sign LeBron James as a free agent. If they get him, maybe one of those centers stays at most.
Sabonis could also be on the move to Golden State
If the Warriors want to make something of their new Curry/James era, they need to lock down the five. Making a move on Sabonis could do that for them. He is a double-double machine that generates offense when utilized correctly. The Warriors could be the team for that.
While Curry gets a lot of credit for his incredible shooting, his playmaking is where he has always had his biggest impact. Very few players can pass the way he can and set up the rest of his team for success. Yes, he is a clutch shot king, but he also needs people to feed under the hoop.
Now, add James to that. Sure, he's still the guy to take the shot, but his game has changed over the years. James has, to an extent, become more of a passer and a facilitator as well. He could also benefit from having a guy like Sabonis around, working the paint and pulling down rebounds.
Being that the Warriors are reportedly trying to put something big together, they need a center who can keep up. That's Sabonis. He would be a much better fit in San Francisco than he is in Sacramento, considering the direction of both franchises at this time.
