The Sacramento Kings are well into training camp with their first preseason game on the horizon. One of the big topics of conversation has been rookie point guard Darius Acuff, who is getting rave reviews from teammates and coaches. Fans can't wait to see him in action in the regular season.
Acuff has a lot of pressure on him going into 2026-2027. The rookie is the starting point guard for an NBA franchise in the midst of a full rebuild. He has to get up to NBA speed quickly and take control of a team that has been spiraling for two decades. It's not a big deal or anything like that.
A couple of days into training camp, the rest of the Kings are already happy with Acuff. During recent press time, All-Star center Domantas Sabonis gave the rookie high praise. Their chemistry is both obvious and growing, and Sabonis seems genuinely excited to work with him.
On top of that, Acuff also has a fan in head coach Doug Christie. He's impressed by his new point guard's work ethic and his dedication to the team. Even the most jaded Kings fans might find it difficult to not get caught up in the wave of optimism floating around the team right now.
Acuff might actually be the Kings' future
Naturally, everyone should take these comments with a grain of salt. No one involved with the Kings is going to jump in front of a camera during training camp and trash talk the franchise in any capacity. That includes, but is not limited to, the team's brand new point guard.
Keeping that in mind, it doesn't hurt to indulge yourself in a little hope regarding Sacramento's future. Considering how the past decade or two have gone for the Kings, keeping your emotions about this franchise's future guarded is more than fair. But Acuff could be the start of something new.
No one is saying anything crazy about Acuff or over-selling him. All that's being said is that he's doing the work, has the skills, and is building chemistry with his new teammates. No one is suggesting he's going to lead them to a title this season. It's just a conversation about real change starting to happen.
That is something Sacramento fans can, and should, get behind. Having Acuff as the new starting point guard definitely isn't the end of the journey for the Kings. What he represents is a key step on that path, someone who could actually help get this rebuild fully rolling.
