In his post-game media availability after a California Classic game, the Sacramento Kings' Dylan Cardwell proved once again once again why he is the heart and soul of this franchise. More than that, he is becoming the Kings' culture guy, holding his teammates to a higher standard this season.
It's never a dull moment when Dylan Cardwell and I have an exchange.

It's impossible to forget ABC's Kevin John's impromptu interview with Cardwell after the Kings' final home game of the 2025-2026 season. This unscripted, unplanned moment was a glimpse into the mind of a breakout rookie who fought his way from undrafted to the main roster in one season.
Sactown fans had already completely fallen for Cardwell over the course of the season. His energy game on both offense and defense led to endless big plays and highlight reel worth moments. Plus, his high octane celebrations got the Golden 1 Center jumping every time.
The spontaneous interview after everyone left the court showed exactly how thoughtful and intelligent Cardwell is. His gratitude was, and is, infectious. All of that showed up again a few days ago when John spoke with Cardwell once again, this time after a California Classic victory.
Cardwell believes in accountability for the entire team
This time, Cardwell spoke about the need for him, Maxime Raynaud, and Nique Clifford to take leadership roles on a roster that is getting younger and younger. He called his fellow sophomores the new team veterans, and talked about how there was no time for year two plateaus.
Cardwell has consistently demonstrated the mentality of a winner who knows that Sacramento can only succeed as a team. He believes his responsibility to his teammates is to hold them accountable to the highest standard possible. That's the exact culture the Kings are trying to cultivate.
There's no question that Cardwell will be the leader in that regard. Yes, this will be Darius Acuff's team on the court, as it should be for the Kings' primary point guard. Even with that in mind, Cardwell is the culture setter, bringing maturity, professionalism, gratitude, and joy to every game he plays.
If the Kings stick with Cardwell and he keeps bringing this positivity to his roster, Sacramento will find the success they're looking for as part of this rebuild. Every time he gets interviewed, it becomes increasingly clear how integral Cardwell is to this franchise from every possible angle.
Now, he just needs to get those fouls under control.
