If anyone captured the hearts of Sacramento Kings fans last season, it was Dylan Cardwell. The undrafted rookie became a breakout star due to his high energy game as well as his infectiously positive attitude. That is exactly what the Kings need if they're going to make this rebuild work.

Not enough people talk about Cardwell's college career, partially because he downplays it. He was an Auburn Tiger from 2020 to 2025, and is the winningest player in the history of Auburn men's basketball. This is the same college program that produced Charles Barkley in the distant past.

He declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, but wasn't selected by any teams. That was likely discouraging but Cardwell kept rolling and was eventually signed to a two-way contract by the Kings. What he did after that might be the perfect example of why fans love him so much.

Cardwell steals Sacramento's hearts and minds

Not only did he play well in the G League, Cardwell took every opportunity to get on the court with the NBA team. As more members of main roster fell to injuries, he got increasing minutes. When fellow rookie Maxime Raynaud became the starting center, Cardwell became his backup.

Sure, he was an absolute force on defense, regularly racking up multiple blocks in a game. Cardwell also showed up as an elite rebounder, particularly on offense. On top of that, he's also a dangerous lob threat who isn't afraid to throw it down in anyone's face. There's so much more to him.

Cardwell plays with a level of joy, gratefulness, and authenticity that few in the NBA can match. He's genuinely excited and thankful to be there. This is a man who doesn't feel like he's owed anything, and is legitimately happy to put the work in to earn it all every day. That's what the Kings need.

The Cardwell effect on the Kings

After the trade deadline, Scott Perry quite smartly signed Cardwell to a long-term proper NBA contract. The franchise obviously recognized the high ceiling on his skills, and the level of player he will be with a couple more years of development and on-court experience.

More than that, this roster needs his positivity. Heck, the entire Sactown fan base needs it. It's hard not to get behind a guy who is so openly joyous about just being on an NBA court. In a matter of months, Cardwell has built a deep connection with the fans and that is hard to find.

For the rebuild to work, the fans have to be on board through some very tough seasons that are still coming. Cardwell's energy will help get everyone through those rough times. He has to be number one on Sacramento's no-trade list, and should be protected at all costs.
