Drafting Otega Oweh would bring a major set of skills to the Kings

It would be a surprising, but effective, pick.

The Sacramento Kings are going into the draft with one first-round pick in the top ten. They also have a pair of second-round picks to put to work. Using one of them for Kentucky Wildcats guard Otega Oweh would be a great choice, particularly for a team in need of a player like him.

Oweh is a seasoned collegiate shooting guard who played with Oklahoma from 2022 to 2024 and Kentucky from 2024 to 2026. He made a name for himself on the Wildcats as a playmaker who scored well and hit clutch shots. That included a huge NCAA tournament basket against Santa Clara.

According to the most recent mock draft from FanSided, Oweh is currently projected to get picked 56th by the Chicago Bulls. That same mock draft is showing the Kings taking center Ugonna Onyenso at 34 and forward Tobi Lawal at 45. They are interesting choices, to say the least.

The Kings definitely need more wing depth, something a player like Lawal would help fix. Given that they currently have four bigs in Domantas Sabonis, Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell, and Precious Achiuwa, selecting Onyenso makes less sense. That's why Oweh could be a better choice at 34.

Oweh has the potential to be a legit shooting threat for the Kings

Yes, Sacramento is in need of a new point guard. That's well established at this point, with that same mock draft projecting the Kings now taking Mikel Brown Jr. at seven. Prior to that, several mock drafts have connected Sacramento with Darius Acuff Jr. Either player would be a great choice.

That doesn't mean they should pass on Oweh. He is a potentially elite shooting guard, and the Kings also need more shooters. He is strong, fast, and agile, allowing him to cut through the defense and finish with authority at the rim. And he tears through contact like a storm through tissue paper.

He thrives in the open court, dominates in transition, and is fearless in clutch moments. Beyond that, Oweh is a versatile defender who has the speed and lateral quickness to defend multiple positions. He also has no problems going one-on-one with any ball-handler the opposition throws at him.

All of that being said, Oweh isn't perfect. He has to develop as an on-court general and needs to work on his consistency from the perimeter. But those are problems easily fixed with time and practice, and they certainly don't outweigh the major benefits he brings to the roster. Oweh could be a great King.
