Don't expect any roster announcements from the Kings soon

Now is the time for careful consideration.

Between their two regular spots and the one two-way contract, the Sacramento Kings have three roster spaces left to fill. But anyone expecting official announcements any time soon should take a beat. The Kings aren't going to finalize those details soon, as time and patience are on their side.

The fun part about this time of year in the NBA is all of the rampant rumors and speculation. The downside is that facts and answers are few and far between. It gets oddly quiet until the preseason gets close and teams start finalizing their rosters for the 2026-2027 regular season.

That will definitely include the Kings, who still have a total of three spots to fill and next to no salary cap space to do it with. Fortunately, two-way contracts do not count toward cap space, so that's not a major concern. Well, at least from the money perspective. They still have to find someone.

It seemed like the other two main roster spots were likely to go to Russell Westbrook and/or a returning Victor Oladipo. Then, Westbrook through a curveball to the entire league, and possibly the Kings front office, by suddenly announcing his retirement yesterday.

Sacramento's front office is taking it's time right now

As it stands, the Kings are biding their time to see where the market ends up. It's not just them, of course, as the entire league is in a bit of a holding pattern. Most of the major free agency moves have been made by this point. What's left are the final decisions that each team needs to make.

Sacramento is definitely in that mode right now. They were seriously limited on what they could do thanks to their monetary situation in the first place. Regardless, they have made a few moves here and there, mostly thanks to the draft. They would need some major trades to get anything else done.

As it stands right now, most of the Kings' targets for their remaining roster spots aren't high priorities for other teams. Outside of Sacramento, there's limited interest in Oladipo. As such, the front office can take their time and make sure they iron everything out before committing.

That being said, Sacramento shouldn't wait too long. Fans saw what happened when the Kings slept on Marquel Sutton just a little too long as he's now signed to a different team. If Sacramento has players they want on the roster now, don't leave an opening for another franchise to grab them.
