Right now, Sacramento Kings fans are wondering just how many changes will come to the team this summer. It is clear that the front office is considering some massive adjustments, and the roster could look radically different when 2025-26 tips off in the fall.
As we recently mentioned, one of the biggest problems in Sacramento is that no one is untradable. Unlike other teams struggling in the NBA, the Kings don't have any stars who are off-limits, which says a lot about the makeup of the roster and how dismal their chances are. So, that means they could really shake things up and try a massive rebuild in the months ahead.
If they do, they could part ways with big man Domantas Sabonis. And he might bring them a young guard who could be the future of the Kings, or any team.
The Lakers could say goodbye to Austin Reaves..for the right price
The Los Angeles Lakers have a problem: they need a reliable big man and they need one badly.
Even with the addition of generational talent Luka Doncic a few months ago, life hasn't been the same for the purple and gold and they are definitely hurting without a strong presence in the paint. No one blamed GM Rob Pelinka for parting ways with Davis in exchange for Doncic, and the Mark Williams trade fiasco wasn't his fault either, but fans are eager for him to make moves and get some might and height in the months ahead.
Sabonis could provide that, but it might require that the Lakers move guard Austin Reaves. Inside reporting from the team says they don't want to give up Reaves because they see him as a future All-Star who could be a great third option behind LeBron James and Luka. But a bad playoff run and looming contract questions could change all that.
Reaves will soon be up for an extension that the Lakers do not want to pay for. Yes, they love the output he delivers, and yes, they saw a big improvement from him this season. But they also don't have a lot of cash to throw around, especially when they are intent on replacing Davis this summer. Plus, Reaves' performance in the postseason raised a few eyebrows because he wasn't looking great at times.
Still, the Lakers won't trade Reaves for just anyone. However, Sabonis is the exact sort of star they'd be very interested in. He's a proven big man with a lot he can bring to the table right away. He could be LA's missing piece alongside James and Doncic. And for the Kings, Reaves might be a future untradeable star whom they can build around. He is the definition of a great starting piece to craft a rebuild around.
It's a long shot, and the Lakers might get cold feet. But if the Kings go down the path of a big rebuild this summer, they may want to pick up the phone and do business with LA. The Lakers are desperate for a player like Sabonis, and they might cough up Reaves - and even more - in order to get him. This could help both teams and could totally change their chances in the upcoming season.
