Sacramento Kings: Grading the assistant coach hires
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Sacramento Kings have hired three assistant coaches to Luke Walton’s staff after a six-week search.
After six weeks, the Sacramento Kings have reportedly hired a trio of assistant coaches to Luke Walton’s staff, despite questions lingering about Luke Walton’s future with the team.
Bob Beyer, Jesse Mermuys and Roy Rana have been hired by the Sacramento Kings, a move that was first reported by The Athletic’s Sam Amick and confirmed by multiple Kings reporters. The report also notes that fan-favorite Bobby Jackson will stay onboard as a member of the player development staff.
The search lasted six weeks, beginning after the Kings announced former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton as their head coach on April 15. Shortly after, former Southern California sports broadcaster Kelli Tennant filed a civil lawsuit accusing Walton of sexual assault. It’s unclear if that delayed the hiring process in any way, but the Sacramento Bee’s Jason Anderson reported that Walton and other members of Kings’ front office had been busy vetting candidates behind the scenes.
There is still pending investigation into Walton by both the Sacramento Kings and the NBA, but the results of which aren’t expected to be known for weeks or months.
Amick also says the Kings are expected two to three more coaches to Walton’s staff, so it’s clear the search isn’t over yet. The Kings also haven’t made a formal announcement about the hires and it’s unclear when they will, but that shouldn’t long now that the story broke.
But, how good are the hires?
