Bogdan Bogdanovic underwent meniscus surgery on April 25. Should fans be worried about the Sacramento Kings rookie’s long-term health?
Bogdan Bogdanovic entered this season as a 25-year-old rookie with a lot of expectation to perform. The Sacramento Kings wing far and away exceeded them this season. The final stat line does not blow you away, but Bogdanovic’s defense, passing ability, and all-around game have fans excited for his future. That is why the news of his knee surgery had us all feeling a little uneasy. The procedure took place on April 25. Below is a Tweet from Jason Jones updating us on the outcome of his operation.
What the news means
Bogdanovic should return to the court at some point around the end of June or early July. That likely eliminates him from playing in Summer League meaning the next time we will see him in game action is next preseason. The smart plan is to attack rehab hard and not to rush back to the court, so having the surgery this early in the offseason is a positive. Barring a setback, he should be a full go in training camp.

Future worries
The news all sounds positive for Bogi, but I have seen knee injuries take a toll on many careers. That lead me to attempt to do a little more research on the procedure he had and what future impacts it could have on his career. Warning, I am not a doctor and do not pretend to play one, so bear with me. Jeff Stotts wrote a fantastic article about meniscus injuries and specifically Derrick Rose’s tear in 2015. Check it out here to learn more about the different types of injuries.
Focusing on Bogdanovic’s current injury, he had a debridement procedure which means they removed the damaged tissue. That is the type of surgery that often allows an NBA player to return to the court sooner but has more long-term effects on the knee. Consider me a little concerned about Bogdanovic’s career-long knee health. He is still young, and this injury should show no ill effects next season. I will be on the lookout for any future knee pain or soreness report, though. I wish for Bogi to have a speedy recovery and a long healthy career in Sacramento.
Final thoughts
Bogdan Bogdanovic underwent knee surgery on April 25 and will be out for eight to ten weeks to recover. A tear in his meniscus was the culprit, and it should keep him out of game action until next preseason. Hopefully, the injury does not have long-term implications on his knee health and the Sacramento Kings have a significant piece in their team for many years to come.
