SACRAMENTO, CA - MARCH 22: Frank Mason III

Frank Mason of the Sacramento Kings tore the plantar fascia in his left foot.  Continue reading for more about his injury and recovery timeline.

Frank Mason sat out the Sacramento Kings game on April 9 with a heel injury.  For the second time this season, it turned out to much more than soreness, though.  Below is a Tweet from Jason Jones detailing Mason’s current condition.

The injury

Mason will miss the season finale on April 11, but early signs are otherwise positive.  Sean Cunningham reported that the injury is less severe than the similar injury he had to his right foot earlier in the season and he would be reevaluated in a couple of weeks if the Kings were still playing.  Mason should be part of the Kings Las Vegas Summer League squad.  A healthy productive showing in a couple of months would be a positive heading into his sophomore campaign.

Going forward

The fact that a 24-year-old tore the plantar fascia in both feet in four months is troubling.  Similar injuries have troubled many professional athletes including NBA players Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah.  The USA Today did a fantastic piece in August of 2013 surrounding plantar fascia injuries which you can read here.  The players profiled in the article were all older than Mason, and that increases my worry.  If you are succumbing to the injuries of 30-somethings in your mid-20’s that could lead to worse times as you advance in age.  Only time will tell if this becomes a chronic issue for Frank Mason, but be on the lookout for him missing time with heel or foot issues in the future.

Final thoughts

Frank Mason suffered a similar plantar fascia to his left foot, and that will keep him off the court for the Kings regular season finale.  Our team will discuss Mason’s rookie campaign more this offseason, but overall it was a positive first step for the young man.  Stay tuned for more information on this injury as it becomes available.
