Zach LaVine could leave the Kings hanging for longer than they'd like

Possibly the biggest unanswered question the Sacramento Kings are dealing with right now is the status of Zach LaVine. He doesn't have to give them an answer on his player option until the end June. The Kings can't decide what to do with him until that is in place, leaving some plans in the air.

It's been apparent since day one that LaVine wasn't a good fit for the Kings. Reportedly, it was co-owner and expert micro-manager Vivek Ranadive who pushed the trade on the front office. Saying that it hasn't worked out well at all may be one of the biggest understatements in the modern NBA.

To be fair to LaVine, he didn't choose to go to Sacramento and he definitely did not put together their imbalanced roster with no defense. As is often the case with athletes in the majors, he played the cards he was dealt and hopefully made the absolute best of it.

Honestly, it was rather unfair of the coaching staff to push LaVine to be a defensive player over a shooter. The man is an NBA veteran with 12 seasons under his belt who has never been known for playing defense. He's a shooter's shooter, so use him to the best of his abilities and go from there.

LaVine will leave the Kings at some point before the next season

That doesn't change the fact that LaVine does not fit the defensive focus head coach Doug Christie has brought to the team. As such, LaVine will be gone at some point. Before the Kings make any plans, he has to decide on his 2026-2027 player option, which he will most likely take.

The problem for the Kings is that he doesn't have to tell them anything until 5:00 p.m. ET on June 29. That's when decisions on a variety of contract stipulations are due across the NBA, including player options. He could keep the Kings waiting for another two months before making an announcement.

Until they get an answer from LaVine, Sacramento will be left making conditional decisions and contingency plans for all scenarios. This also impacts players like Precious Achiuwa, Russell Westbrook, and Daeqwon Plowden who won't know where they stand until LaVine decides.

Given how the financials play out for LaVine, he'd be crazy not to remain on the Kings for the final season of his contract. What is clear at the moment is he is firmly in control of his relationship with Sacramento, whether they want him to be or not. The ball is in his court.
