While the focus of the Sacramento Kings' draft strategy is alleged to be a new point guard, the team also desperately needs to work on their wing depth. That's where Kelly Oubre Jr. comes in. The combo shooting guard/small forward is a free agent, and the Kings should be looking at him.
There's no question that the Kings have a point guard issue to sort out. They need to nail down a starter, someone Russell Westbrook can mentor and help develop. It's integral to the rebuild that this process happens, and it will likely start in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft with Darius Acuff Jr.
At the same time, the lack of wing depth is arguably a much bigger issue. Sacramento needs the defense, shooting, floor spacing, and more provided by power and small forwards. More importantly, they need to be reliable, experienced, and impactful, not to mention fitting Scott Perry's vision.
Assuming the Kings use their first-round pick on a rookie guard, they still have two second-round picks to use on forwards. There will also be opportunities for Sacramento to make moves in free agency to scoop up a couple of new wings, including Oubre, who is an unrestricted free agent.
Oubre checks a lot of boxes for the Kings
After being drafted 15th overall by the Hawks in 2015, Oubre's rights were almost immediately traded to the Wizards. He recently completed his two-year contract with the 76ers, which is his fifth team n in 11 seasons. At the moment, Oubre is an unrestricted free agent looking for a new home.
Well, that's assuming the 76ers don't re-sign Oubre over the offseason themselves. Much like every other team in the league until after draft time. That's when offers and moves will start getting made. And the Kings should do what they need to do to be in the mix on Oubre.
Last season with the 76ers, Oubre was averaging 14.1 points per game on 46.7% from the field and 36.0% from three. On top of that, he was hauling in 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. If that's not enough, he's a versatile defender who can effectively lock down one through four.
All of that being said, Oubre isn't exactly a classic 3&D player as his shooting is too streaky. That doesn't mean he wouldn't add serious wing depth as well as a reliable veteran presence. He would help stabilize the youthful core the Kings are already building.
